“Just A Phase” Music Video (2021)

“Just A Phase” is a song written and performed by Holy Benedikt (Laurin Huxoll) inspired by the difficulties of his homophobic upbringing as a queer person, and how he ultimately triumphs that by reclaiming his autonomy.

The music video was directed by Maya Thao based on the concept and vision of hyperpop artist Holy Benedikt.

I worked closely with the artist to bring his vision to life. He had very clear ideas of what he wanted to depict, so in discussion with him, I outlined some ideas and made a timed storyboard based on the cues of the track. I then pitched the storyboard and color-script to him and the videographer to make sure it was close to his vision and doable. I accompanied them on set to give live directions, and improvised accordingly to the limitations of the space.

This was my first time directing a live shot, so it was a great learning experience and a confirmation that I enjoy directing. The shooting went smoothly and wrapped up within 2 days, on 3 separate locations.
